Dave Cameron has been around racetracks and forests for over 40 years. Dave started in club racing with super sprints and lap dashes as a member of the local car club.
Dave quickly got a taste for this infectious sport and joined up with Team Mick O’Hehir and Don Holland with the Australian Touring Car Championship as a crew member and the rest is history.
Following a period in circuit racing, Dave took to co-driving in rally events and this led to many opportunities competing in club rallies, state rallies and the Australian Rally Championship events. Following corporate negotiations, Dave was the founder of Hyundai Team Australia in 1990 and was the ideas man behind the very first ever Hyundai rally car in the world. Hyundai Team Australia was created with the corporate brand and Dave taking up the Co-Drivers position within the team. Dave co-drove for Wayne Bell, George Fury and Murray Coote who are all champions in their own right. Dave was Team Manager for Hyundai Team Australia’s assault on the 1991 WRC (World Rally Championship) round held in Perth known as Rally Australia as the drivers Wayne Bell and Greg Carr finished in the top two class positions.
Following his career in co-driving, Dave wanted to become more involved in racing and as he was at the time partnered with Wayne Bell who also raced a HQ in the Holden series. Dave purchased and built a HQ and competed in the ever popular HQ Series. This period lasted some 6 years with various results including wins; several podiums at state level; five appearances at the Indy Carnival and 32 starts at Mt Panorama.
Dave then stepped forward to drive the Toll Porsche for Paul Little Racing (PLR). Dave then joined the start-up V8 team known as PLR Paul Little racing in Melbourne with driver, Anthony Tratt. Dave was instrumental in the sponsorship hunt for Team Toll Racing and was a hands-on team member for 7 years. Dave was the negotiator that got Alan Jones the Toll seat for both the 1999 and 2000 Bathurst 1000 race.
Dave has worked with a long list of top drivers in both circuit racing and rallying including: F1 World Champion, Alan Jones; Gold star champion, Paul Stokell; touring car driver from the 80s Mick O’Hehir and Don Holland; Tomas Mezera; Craig Baird; John Bowe; Australian Rally Champions, George Fury and Greg Carr; Asia Pacific Driver and NSW Rally Champion, Wayne Bell; V8 Super Car Drivers, Anthony Tratt and Bob Jones. However, nothing gives Dave more excitement than to watch his boys race on track.
Dave rebuilt the Davison Gemini Sports Sedan in 2012 and took two lap records at Sydney Motorsport Park. One record time still stands today. David has the Oran Park NSWRRC lap record for HQ Holdens and in the following years he supported his boys Glen and Scott in their HQ racing endeavours history repeating itself .
Dave purchased the Greg Smith built Michael Auld Commodore Sports Sedan to contest state and national sport sedan events recently at the Bathurst 12 hour event in 2020 and the Team qualified in the top 10 and had 2 top 10 finishes with driver Scott Cameron .
